(Ocean Springs, MS) - Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival, the annual feature event in Ocean Springs, won top honors at the Southeast Tourism Society (STS) annual meeting last week with the “Festival of the Year” award. Promoting travel in a 12-state region, STS presented Shining Example Awards as part of its 30th anniversary celebration in Jacksonville, Florida on November 5.
“We are thrilled that our little town is getting so much recognition”, said Margaret Miller, executive director of the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce-Main Street-Tourism Bureau. “More and more people are finding out that Ocean Springs is one of a kind.”
“A lot of credit for this event goes to our loyal sponsors, especially F.E.B. Distributing, Blue Moon, and the Mississippi Press” among others, said Miller. “We also need to recognize the support of Mayor Connie Moran, Ocean Springs Board of Aldermen, Jackson County Board of Supervisors, and BP who supplied a grant”, Miller said.
“The Shining Example Awards highlight some of the best work in travel and tourism, and winners truly set examples that others in the industry can follow”, said Bill Hardman, STS President and CEO.
Travel and tourism professionals from twelve Southeastern states make up the membership of STS.
“Showcasing great work is important because tourism is the largest, second largest, or third largest industry in every Southeastern state”, said Hardman. On the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the tourism industry is recognized as the top non-government employer.
Margaret Miller, Cynthia Sutton and Shawn Sutton accepted the “Shining Example, Festival of the Year” award during the conference.
The Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival celebrated its 35th anniversary on November 2 and 3. Attendance estimates top 150,000 festival-goers.
Ocean Springs also won the national Great American Main Street award in 2013.
