It’s almost impossible to walk down the Oak-lined streets of Ocean Springs without seeing local artwork such as a beautiful painting, a piece of pottery or a creative mural along the way. Ocean Springs has been recognized for its artistic culture with its 2013 Great American Main Street Award and several article mentions such as “Ocean Springs is One of America’s Most Artistic Towns” by Expedia.
The heart of Ocean Springs’ art culture began with the Anderson family. Walter and Peter Anderson were brothers that both were gifted with artistic talents. Walter painted organic designs and Peter created beautifully shaped pottery pieces.
Shearwater Pottery was founded in 1928 by Peter and continues to produce pottery, utilitarian ware, figurines, decorative tiles and other pieces unique in nature today.
The Walter Anderson Museum of Art honors Walter and his artwork along with the famous Little Room where he frequented his time to bring life to every inch of the walls, floor and ceiling.
The Anderson family is still buzzing with artistic talents and upholds the brothers’ traditions. The children of Peter continue the works of their father at Shearwater Pottery, and the children of Walter uphold their father’s artwork at Realizations, the Walter Anderson Retail Shop, and the Walter Anderson Museum of Art.
The Peter Anderson Arts & Crafts Festival sponsored by Blue Moon started back in 1978 as a small pottery festival honoring Peter. The Festival has now grown to over 450 arts & crafts vendors with food, live entertainment and over 50,000 visitors to the Ocean Springs’ area every first weekend of November. It is nationally recognized as a Fine Arts Festival and one of the largest festivals in the Southeast. The Festival has also been dubbed as the “Largest Festival of the Year” by Mississippi Tourism and as one of the Southeast Tourism Society’s “Top 20 Events for 2016”.
